6 of the Best Beach Bars

Bucket lists at the ready...

Finding a great beach bar is the vacation holy grail – a place where you can settle in and watch the world go by, preferably with a cold beverage in hand. Here are six of our favorite tried-and-tested beach bars, sure to get you reaching for your passport in no time.

Catch Beach Club,  Surin Beach, Thailand

CatchBar1_WPOn Phuket’s beautiful Surin beach, Catch offers great seafood, delicious cocktails and top-notch people watching. With a Miami South-Beach vibe – think white and teak loungers, white-clad staff and groovy beats – it’s a great spot to while away the hours. Come for a sundowner and stay late if the mood takes you.

Karakter Beach, St Martin

KarakterIMG_9674_WPAlways busy and always fun, Karakter Beach bar is on Simpson Bay on the Dutch side of the island. It’s right next to the airport, which makes it the perfect place to enjoy your first and last taste of St Martin. Settle into a comfy banquette and try their signature frozen mojito, and if you have any kids in your party, Karakter’s delicious fresh juices will go down a treat.

The Dune Preserve, Rendezvous Bay, Anguilla

dune1_WPThis world-famous bar is frequently tops the best-of lists. Set on the white sands of Rendezvous Bay, made from driftwood and recycled boats and run by Reggae musician Bankie Banx, it’s the beach bar of your imagination. The food menu can be limited, but it makes a great pre-or post-dinner stop. Bankie sometimes performs at night so head down after sunset if you’re looking for live music to go with your cold beer. If you’re staying on St. Barts or St. Martin, Anguilla is just a short hop over the water and makes a great day trip. Photograph: Lacy Colley-Yamaoka

Potato Head Bar, Seminyak, Bali

PotatoHead2_WPDespite it’s name, Potato Head Beach Club is so chic you’d almost think you were in Manhattan if it weren’t for the waves crashing on the shore nearby. If you want a break from the sun beating down you can always explore the building itself – one wall is entirely made up wooden Indonesian shutters, that seem to glow from within once the sun goes down. Add a fabulous cocktail list to the visual spectacle and you’ve got one very memorable location.
