The top destinations to visit this month

In August it feels like the whole world is on vacation: from Ibiza and the French Riviera, to Tuscany’s rolling hills, getting a last minute reservation can be near impossible. And while these European hotspots do book up months in advance, there are plenty of other places just perfect to visit in August. Here are a five destinations that will not disappoint.

South Africa

August is springtime in South Africa, when wildflowers paint the deserts north of Cape Town vibrant orange, yellow, and white. Some of the best flower viewing sites can be found along the Namaqualand Flower route, roughly 5 hours north of the city. For daytrips within easier reach of Cape Town, plan your trip for late August or early September, when the flowers are in bloom further south.

Hawaii

The dry season from April-October is when Hawaii’s near-perfect weather is at its sunny best. And while summer in Hawaii is far from a well-kept secret, August rates are significantly lower than for top winter travel dates like Christmas and New Year’s. Not sure which island to choose? If sightseeing is a must, opt for Oahu or Maui and their varied attractions, from surfing to hiking. For a more laid-back tropical escape, consider Big Island’s golf and spa resorts, or the natural beauty of Kauai.

Coastal California

Pacific breezes keep California’s West Coast beaches at a comfortable temperature, even as inland temperatures soar. Check out the surf scene in Malibu or stroll along the boardwalk in Venice – each L.A. beach has its own unique vibe. For families with kids or teens, fun-filled Santa Monica is hard to beat, with everything from an aquarium to an amusement park and even a trapeze school!

Bali

August may be monsoon season in much of Asia, but it’s actually one of the best months to visit the Indonesian islands of Bali and Lombok. With year-round highs that regularly hit 90°F it’s always hot in Bali – but the June-September dry season is the most comfortable time to travel. Interested in learning more about Balinese culture? Time your visit for the Legian Beach Festival from August 28-30 and enjoy music, dance and cultural performances.

Barcelona

Barcelona is a city that knows how to have a good time, and the summer party vibe is in full swing by August. Come here now if you’re looking for exciting nightlife, poolside parties, and nonstop people watching on Barceloneta Beach. If the hustle and bustle are just too much, escape the city for a day of sightseeing at Montserrat or a winery tour. Of course, if you prefer a more laid-back vibe, consider traveling in September, when the weather is still beautiful and attractions are less crowded.
