Ahhhhhhhh, June! It’s the month that transforms summer from a distant fantasy to a plausible reality. Gardens are in full bloom, summer festivals are in full swing, and beach chairs are being broken in. It’s the first meal in summer’s three-course spread—and your mouth is watering just thinking about it.

From the eclectic Bali Arts Festival to the pulsating sounds and vibrant vibes at Sonar in Barcelona, our cross continental must-try events in June promise a delectable first taste of summer.

Sonar Music Festival, Barcelona

For its 10th anniversary, Sonar Music Festival is showcasing some of electric dance music’s biggest acts. But it’s not just a feast for your ears—Sonar combines sweet sounds with impressive visuals: video art projections and art installations are part of the experience too. Plus, it’s in Barcelona, one of our favorite European cities. Need a break from the sensory overload of the festival? Take a load off at Barceloneta beach for a couple of hours or spend a relaxing day at your luxurious home away from home. Sonar Music Festival is taking place from June 12-14. Bali Arts Festival

After months of training, performers from across Bali come together in friendly competition to showcase their talents at the annual Arts Festival. Expect eclectic music, colorful costumes and a wide variety of performances from a gamelan orchestra to traditional dance groups. The festival stretches for the entire month, so there’s ample opportunity for travelers check out a couple of events.

Blue Note Jazz Festival, New York 

With over 150 acts in 30 different venues, attending every show during the NYC Jazz festival is an impossible feat. But if you’re looking to enjoy a night of live music in the city this month, you’ll have plenty of choice. The 30-day festival is nicely tuned to appeal to all music fans. You might be surprised to find Wyclef Jean on the billet, or soul-invigorating weekly Sunday morning performances by the Harlem Gospel Choir. And as you’ll already be in New York City, why not check out the annual summer installation at the Met’s rooftop, and hit Maison Premiere’s oyster happy hour in Brooklyn before the show. The Blue Note Jazz Festival takes place from June 1- June 30 at various locations in the city.

L.A. Film Festival

For 20 years, the Los Angeles Film Festival has been showcasing up and comers in the cinema scene. Attracting almost 100,000 attendees each year, it showcases independent, international, documentary and short films as well as music videos. The diverse genres add up to over 200 different screenings by filmmakers from 30 different countries. For those looking to expand their knowledge about the industry, there are panels and seminars available to the public. There’s a competitive element too—the best film in show wins $15,000. If you’re a budding filmmaker, unfortunately you’ve missed the submission deadline—but all cinema lovers can enjoy the vast array of creations on offer at the fest. The L.A. film festival takes place from June 11-June 19 in Downtown L.A.

Waikiki Artfest, Honolulu

A quaint two-day festival, the Waikiki Artfest features handcrafted pieces from over 75 local artists. From sculptures, to clothing, prints and jewelry, immerse yourself in the best of the Hawaiian art scene. Unlike a traditional gallery setting, artists sit close to their creations, discussing their work with locals and tourists alike. And if you get a peckish, fear not—delicious island delicacies and drinks are available on site to keep you refreshed. The Artfest takes place from June 21-22.
