Ever wonder how the expression ‘living out loud’ would translate in a decor sense? Well, take a look at the living room in the very fabulous Old Las Palmas villa in Palm Springs, California. For a desert location, this villa is anything but dull and dry. Full of retro-inspired bursts of bold colour, personality for days and an overall playful sense of style, taking inspiration from this room is the perfect way to breathe a little (or a lot) of life into your own living room. Here’s how to get the look:
Bright Upholstered Sofa
This room plays within the blue and green colour palette – with pretty much every shade in between – from kelly green accents on the pillows to a turquoise leather chair. In keeping with the theme (and in the spirit of the spring season upon us) here are some sofas in the same spectrum. First off, Anthropologie is a great place to find furniture with bold prints, interesting patterns and bright colours a that reflect the company’s bohemian chic style. A little more subtle than the sofa at Old Last Palmas, this Belgian linen Angelina Sofa in Mistletoe is a nice fresh pop of green in a very contemporary, sleek silhouette that would make any living room stand out. If you’d rather go lighter (and why not leather?) this Mina Sofa in Mediterranean is a softer sea foam colour that’s a bit more understated, but still a statement piece. One more idea would be to opt for something in on-trend velvet – like the Edlyn Sofa in Emerald – for a rich colour brought to life in an even richer fabric.
This room has three armchairs: a set of two that match and a bright, bold statement leather one. First, the set of two: With a slight retro feel in shape and the Greek geometric key fabric (not to mention the furry blue pillows) these chairs are ready for a good time. Florrie + Bill is a UK based company that restores vintage furniture like these awesome Wool Cocktail Chairs in mint green which would be a perfect addition to this living room. At Crate and Barrel, the 1950s inspired Gia Chair in Paint, Mist has is a tasteful but bold floral print incorporating the greens and blues of the room’s colour palette all the while adding some hints of yellow on a cream background for a refreshing break. As for the leather armchair, back at Anthropologie – the mecca of colourful furniture – you’ll find this Premium Leather Tillie Armchair in a selection of statement shades including the very apropos Caribbean turquoise. With its high back and low, sloping arms, it’s the perfect seat to settle into with a cocktail. In keeping with the wingback style, there’s a One Kings Lane model in a bright, fun aqua with silver nailhead trim, or Crate and Barrel has a more subdued Mountain Spring coloured version that’s a deeper, less bold and more conventional shade of blue leather.
Mirrored Coffee Table
Not only is a mirrored coffee table extremely versatile, but it can also bring light and colour to the room. The UK brand MirrorBox specializes in exactly this with three sizes (venetian cube, low square and low rectangle) as well as a smoked mirror option. For something slightly different, Mecox makes a sophisticated square mirror and brass edged coffee table that rests on a plinth base, while Anthropologie has their own tasteful mirror top, art deco inspired version with refractive Lucite legs and cast brass base.
Retro Space Age Light fixture
This eye catching, vintage-style light fixture with bright yellow bulbs is the cherry on the top of this bold living room space. A more paired down version would be West Elm’s Moblie Chandelier with three adjustable arms and six clear, oversized light bulbs for a very modern look. Slightly closer to the style of the Old Las Palmas one pictured – but still contemporary in feel – is Restoration Hardware’s Sputnik Filament lighting collection was inspired by the space race (and is reminiscent of a star burst) with Edison-esque filament bulbs. If you’re looking for something more conceptual to complement your living room, there’s a very cool sculptural, four-light pyramid chandelier from the West Elm Collection, made to order and inspired by science and mathematics.
