Vacation Diary – Riviera Maya, Mexico

Fashion stylist and art director Azamit traveled to Hacienda del Mar for a recent fashion shoot

If style is the way that a person communicates without speaking, then the woman known in fashion circles as Azamit wordlessly conveys poise, grace and elegance. An icon on the Canadian fashion scene, she has traveled all over the world as a model and has been a stylist and fashion director at Elle magazine for the past fifteen years.

Having recently returned from Hacienda del Mar in Riviera Maya, styling a shoot for a department store, her sunny disposition is especially radiant. The Eritrean-born Azamit confesses that she has never quite gotten the hang of the long Canadian winters. “The sun and sea chased the winter doldrums away,” she says. “And the accommodation we were first class. Soulful and sophisticated, the Hacienda Del Mar tastefully marries luxury and functionality together.”

“We had a private chef to prepare our meals and we would all dine together out on the veranda overlooking the Caribbean”

She says that as soon as she entered the hacienda she was spellbound by the sound of birdsong, the amazing artwork adorning the walls and the magnificent views from the villa. “The turquoise water and pristine sand were so near at hand it was a constant temptation to abandon work and dive into the summoning waves.”

Working with a crew of ten that featured Quebec supermodel Marie-Eve Nadeau and sought after fashion photographer, Jean Claude Lussier, she says the 10,000 square foot, 10-bedroom villa was the ideal base for the long days of shooting. “We had a private chef to prepare our meals and we would all dine together out on the veranda overlooking the Caribbean. The meals were out of this world and that time we spent breaking bread together was a rare moment to bond as a team.”

“You might look up from your plate and discover George Clooney or Kate Moss sitting at the table opposite you”

A frequent visitor to Mexico, Azamit describes herself as an upscale traveller who enjoys an authentic yet luxurious experience. “I don’t like package tours and obvious tourist destinations,” she says. “I want to get off the beaten track, but still want to be catered to.”
The picturesque town of Tulum is only a half an hour from the Hacienda Del Mar and Azamit’s only regret was that the fashion shoot didn’t afford her more time to spend there. “It’s a hot spot with celebrities looking for a remote getaway,” she explains. “And the restaurants there are a seafood lovers’ paradise.” Her descriptions of the ceviche and mojitos at the restaurant Zamas were enough to make us want to pack our bags right away. “The only thing better than the food is the atmosphere,” continues Azamit. “You might look up from your plate and discover George Clooney or Kate Moss sitting at the table opposite you.” A sly smile appears on the stylist’s face as she confides that she has already booked a return trip to the region. “But this time it won’t be about work. The focus will be pleasure and relaxation. And nothing else.”
